ANXIETY AND THE MENOPAUSE

You most probably have suffered from stress and anxiety at some point in your life, maybe particularly at this moment in time on the planet for too many reasons to mention.

When you throw in the mix one rollercoaster ride of fluctuating hormones such as the menopause, there is a whole new added dimension to it all and it can become extremely intense and debilitating at times.

I know too well how dreadful this can be as I suffer with this same condition myself.

Many women I know who are peri menopausal or have hit the menopause talk to me about this state of hyperarousal and how debilitating this feels to them.

When you experience anxiety, changes in neurotransmitter activity flood your brain with stress hormones, affect breathing and muscle tension, and reroute blood to the brain, arms and legs ready to “fight” or “flight,” moving it away from abdominal organs as your primitive self-preservation apparatus kicks in and puts you on high alert.

Of particular concern is the elevation of cortisol levels.

This can increase your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and other chronic diseases.

Cortisol increases the appetite, makes us crave fatty and sweet food and signals the body to shift metabolism to store fat particularly around the organs.

The body’s self-regulating mechanisms typically return your body to a state of equilibrium after feelings of fear have passed.

However, the continuous exposure to stress hormones, including cortisol, caused by chronic anxiety can produce extreme health effects affecting your entire body, including your digestive, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems.

If you are still menstruating It may be affecting your fertility.

It can cause you to experience the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause more severely.

So here are a few tips that will help you to ground yourself, and focus on the moment rather than the continuous obsessive thoughts.

1) REGULAR EXERCISE

Exercise releases serotonin and endorphins, both neurotransmitters that elevate mood. It also has the extra benefit of improving sleep quality.

2)RELAXATION TECHNIQUES

Stress intensifies anxiety and negative thought patterns.

While this is easier said than done for those experiencing anxiety disorder, learning relaxation methods is essential for your mental and emotional health.

Try to take about fifteen minutes or more every day to be alone and focus on relaxation techniques such as breath work or meditation.

Positive self-talk or written affirmations can help.

Forgive yourself for having that thought, “That thought is not who I am”

3) HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS

It could be helpful to take a natural herbal remedy as there are many on the market to choose from.

Valerian and Passiflower are an example of two that are good for helping you calm down that over stimulated nervous system and relax.

Rhodiola is particularly good for anxiety.

I also recommend magnesium taken as a supplement before bed or in the form of magnesium salts before as it is a muscle relaxant

4)NUTRITION

Cut out stimulants such as alcohol and caffeine and sugar, follow an anti inflammatory nutrition plan.

Sometimes a good liver cleanse is highly beneficial and will bring your body back to a state of balance.

5)CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) can really help with this as can EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)

Both of these I find particularly helpful whenever I find myself feeling anxious.
